Rising Tide by Deb Todd Wheeler

In 1988 the discovery of a patch of accumulated plastic debris in the North Pacific larger than the size of Texas captured the imagination of many, providing tangible evidence that indeed nothing we make ever leaves us really.

In this piece, Rising Tide, shades of grey and subtle tonal shifts in blue polyethylene (thin plastic bags) are manipulated on a flatbed scanner to resemble a cresting ocean wave in 12 individual scans. Each scan is arranged so that the overall inkjet print reads as a striking single image of both plastic and an immense ocean wave.
